Pioneers fall to Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action Tuesday (Oct. 16) evening as they were defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe the University of Mount Union, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22).

The opening set of the game started as a back and forth battle with the game being tied eight separate times, and remained deadlocked at 10 points apiece.  The Pioneers offense was sparked by kills from Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison).  Mount Union was able to gain an advantage late in the opening frame and won 25-18.

The second frame opened as a tightly contested match as the game was tied five times and remained tied at 9-9.  Marietta was propelled by a pair of kills from Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace).  Mount Union was able to grab the lead late, and won the second set, 25-23.

The third set saw Mount Union jump out to an 7-3 edge, which forced a Pioneers timeout.  Later in the set Marietta went on a 5-0 run to cut the Mount Union lead to 15-13.  The run was sparked by back to back service aces from April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).  The third and final set remained close until the end, but Mount Union won 25-22.

The Pioneers offense was led by Barnes as she nine kills, two block assists, and one solo block in the match.  Arrowood pitched in with six kills, and three block assists in the match.

Defensively, Marietta was led by Davis as she had a game high 16 digs, as well as three service aces.  Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) added 11 digs to the Pioneers defense.
