Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late goal sinks Women's Soccer

MARIETTA, Ohio — St. John Fisher College scored with less than five minutes remaining in the match to beat Marietta College 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 9) afternoon in women's soccer. The loss drops Marietta to 1-2-1 on the season. The Cardinals improve to 1-3 overall.

Shiane Irwin dropped a cross into the six-yard box from the left corner. Logan Chase took the cross and went upper-90 just inside the far post for the game winner in the 86th minute. The goal was Chase's first of the season.

The Cardinals grabbed the lead in the first half with a goal in the 38th minute. Hannah Buschner fired a shot that was blocked by Marietta keeper Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer). Conkle wasn't able to control the ball and Jackie Romano was there to put the follow-up shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Marietta leveled the match five minutes later. Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley) threaded a perfect through ball between the Cardinal defense to Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) in the 18-yard box. LaGreca took the ball into the six and slipped the ball inside the right post for her first career goal.

Conkle finished with six saves in goal for the Pioneers. Melissa McGowan went the distance in net for St. John Fisher and turned away four Marietta shots.

The Cardinals outshot Marietta, 12-7, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. St. John Fisher was awarded seven corner kicks to only one for the Navy Blue and White.

The Pioneers hit the road again for a pair of non-conference matches next week. Marietta plays at Hiram on Tuesday (Sept. 12) at 7:30 p.m. and at Oberlin on Friday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m.
