BEREA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace scored on its first five possessions of the second half to break open a close game en route to a 52-24 win over Marietta College Saturday (Sept. 30) afternoon. Marietta falls to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets are also 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC.
Marietta running back
Roger Walker (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) rushed for 141 yards on 16 carries. His final run of the game went for 60 yards and gave the senior 3,003 career rushing yards. Walker was named Marietta's Most Valuable Player in BW's 40th annual Shrine Classic.
The turning point in the game came just before halftime. With the game tied 10-10 and less than a minute left in the half, Marietta went for it on fourth and 10 at the BW 43-yard line. Walker ran for nine yards giving Baldwin Wallace the ball back at their own 34-yard with 25 seconds left.
BW quarterback Jake Hudson his Deion Greer for 42 yards down to the Pioneer 24-yard line. With time winding down, Hudson found Chad Steinwachs in the end zone for the score giving the Yellow Jackets a 17-10 lead at halftime.
Hudson finished the day with 260 yards passing completing 16-of-27 attempts. He tossed five touchdown passes and was picked off once. Hudson also rushed for 107 yards on 11 carries. He was named BW's Most Valuable Player in the game.
Steinwachs finished the day with 5 catches for 65 yards and 3 touchdowns. Greer had 2 receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown and he also carried the ball twice for 48 yards.
Marietta received the second half kickoff but the Yellow Jackets held the Pioneers to three plays and a punt. Baldwin Wallace went straight to the air on the first play from scrimmage and Hudson connected with Jordan Leverette on a 48-yard scoring strike pushing the lead to 14 points, 24-10, two minutes into the third quarter.
On its next two possessions, Marietta went three and out and then fumbled the ball away. The Yellow Jackets cashed in both possessions for touchdowns and quickly pushed their lead to 38-10.
Pioneer quarterback
Darrien Fields (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) threw a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. The first was a 29-yarder to tight end
Bobby Cashaw (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) and the Marietta's final points came on a 7-yard pass from Fields to
Andrew Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore). The last score was set up by Walker's 60-yard run.
Fields completed 20-of-31 passes for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Alex Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) had 6 catches for 71 yards and Barker caught 5 aerials for 55 yards and a score.
In addition to Walker,
Tanner Clark (Caldwell, Ohio/Caldwell) carried the ball 9 times for 57 yards and 1 touchdown. His touchdown was a 32-yard run in the second quarter.
Garrett Davis (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Caleb Boy (Franklin, Ohio/Carlisle) led the Pioneer defense. Davis had a game-high 13 tackles including 4 solo stops and 9 assisted tackles. Boy made 3 solo tackles and assisted on 9 other stops for a total of 12 tackles in the game.
Marietta returns home to host John Carroll University next Saturday (Oct. 7). Kickoff at Don Drumm Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.
