Balanced attack leads John Carroll over Pioneers

MARIETTA, Ohio — John Carroll University downed Marietta College 48-21 Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon in Don Drumm Stadium. The Blue Streaks improve to 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta falls to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.

John Carroll, the defending OAC champions, scored on its first four possessions of the game and never looked back. Sam Kukura dove in from a yard out to cap an 8-play, 65-yard drive and give the Blue Streaks a 7-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.

After forcing the Pioneers to punt, JCU marched 70 yards on seven plays for a 14-0 lead with 3:28 left in the first quarter. Anthony Moeglin hit Eddie Williamson on a 30-yard scoring strike for the first of three touchdown passes on the day.

Marietta responded with its best drive of the day. The Pioneers covered 76 yards on eight plays to cut the JCU lead in half, 14-7. Darrien Fields (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) found Roger Walker (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) open for a 14-yard touchdown to cap the drive.

Fields finished the day with three touchdown passes. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 218 yards and no interceptions.

The Blue Streaks added a 34-yard field goal from Matt danko and as 12-yard Kukura touchdown run for a 24-7 lead at halftime.

Kukura scored his third rushing touchdown of the day as John Carroll scored on the opening possession of the second half. Kukura bolted 13 yards for the score and a 31-7 JCU lead.

A pair of false start penalties stalled Marietta's next drive and John Carroll took over at the Marietta 45-yard line following a Jake Tracewell (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) punt. The Blue Streaks moved to the Pioneer 33-yard line and then Moeglin hit Brian Kornowski for the touchdown pushing the lead to 38-7.

Moeglin threw his third touchdown of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter. This one covered six yards to Danny Disbrow and extended the JCY lead to 45-7.

Fields and Walker hooked up for the second time to finish a 7-play, 75-yard drive for Marietta. Walker's reception went for eight yards.

Following Danko's second field goal of the game, this one from 40 yards, Marietta put together its third scoring drive of the afternoon. Fields found Tanner Clark (Caldwell, Ohio/Caldwell) open in the flats and he scampered 15 yards to pay dirt.

Moeglin completed 17-of-25 passes for 257 yards and three scores. He was picked off once. Ro Golphin lead the JCU ground attack gaining 103 yards on 15 carries. Kukura finished with 64 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.

Fields was Marietta's leading rusher gaining 37 yards on 11 carries. Walker was held to 12 yards on 10 carries. He did catch four passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Van Meter (Maysville, W.Va./Petersburg) had seven receptions for 75 yards.

Defensively, Tracewell lead the Pioneers with 11 tackles. James Knox (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) added nine tackles, while Javi Zaragoza (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) had an interception.

Marietta travels to Wilmington College next Saturday (Oct. 14). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
