WILMINGTON, Ohio — With Halloween right around the corner its no surprise that some strange things happened in Marietta College's 43-33 win at Wilmington College Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon.
The Pioneers (3-3 overall, 2-3 OAC) had an offensive lineman score a touchdown and, in what would prove to be the most important play of the day, returned a Wilmington two-point conversion attempt giving Marietta the two points instead.
Trailing the entire game, Wilmington quarterback Luke Creditt hit his brother Matt on a 2-yard touchdown to get within two points, 28-26, with 6:08 left in the third quarter. The Quakers (2-4 overall, 1-4 OAC) elected to go for two and the tie.
Deshawn Maddox fumbled the ball in the backfield and MC's
Garrett Davis (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) scooped it up and raced the length of the field for the defensive conversion. Instead of a tie game, Marietta lead 30-26.
The Pioneers scored on the ensuing possession pushing its lead to 10 points, 36-26. Quarterback
Darrien Fields (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) completed four straight passes on the scoring drive including a 25-yarder to
Ryan Van Meter (Maysville, W.Va./Petersburg) for the touchdown.
Marietta extended the lead to 43-26 early in the fourth quarter.
Chris Harris (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) intercepted a Creditt pass and returned it to the Wilmington 20-yard line. The Pioneers needed just one play to score as
Roger Walker (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) ran it in for his second touchdown of the game.
Wilmington scored with 42 seconds left in the game to make the final score a little more respectable. Creditt threw his fifth touchdown pass of the day hitting Kysean Yorker for 14 yards. Creditt completed 28-of-44 passes for 354 yards. He was picked off once.
Walker finished with 173 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also caught one pass for 22 yards. Walker's lone reception resulted in Marietta's first touchdown of the game. However, Wilmington 's Tre'Quez Parks knocked the ball out of Walker's hands and offensive lineman
Caleb Riggleman (Beverly, W.Va./Elkins) recovered the fumble in the end zone for a Pioneer touchdown.
Fields threw touchdown passes to
Bobby Cashaw (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) and Kobe Hugglett in the first half as the Pioneers lead 21-13 at the break. He completed 18-of-22 passes on the day for 233 yards and four touchdowns. He was picked off once.
Cashaw, MC's tight end, caught five passes for 61 yards.
Andrew Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) had four catches for 29 yards, while
Alex Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) made three catches for 37 yards.
Eric Klopfenstein (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) led the Pioneer defense with 11 tackles.
Caleb Boy (Franklin, Ohio/Carlisle) made 10 stops, while Davis finished with 8 tackles.
Marietta returns home to host Heidelberg University for Homecoming next Saturday (Oct. 21). Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Don Drumm Stadium.
