MARIETTA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace stayed perfect on the season as the Yellow Jackets swept Marietta College 3-0 Thursday (Sept. 28) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action. BW improves to 20-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. The Pioneers fall to 8-11 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Baldwin Wallace scored the final eight points of the first set en route to a 25-14 set win. In the second set, a 25-23 BW win, the Pioneers trailed early but battled back to even the set at 23-23. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of an MC service error and then got a kill from Allyson Smith to take the set.
In the final set, Baldwin Wallace again jumped out to an early lead. Once again the Pioneers fought back and tied the set, 20-20. Kills from
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) and
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) and an ace from
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) put the Pioneers in front 24-22.
A kill from Smith and a ball handling error against MC gave the Yellow Jackets the next two points and tied the set at 24-24. An Irish kill made it 25-24 Marietta, but Baldwin Wallace scored the next three points to secure the set, 27-25, and the match.
Denallo recorded a double-double for the Pioneers with 14 kills and 10 digs. Irish finished with 12 kills and six digs.
Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) dished out 23 assists for the Pioneers, while
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) had 15.
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) led the Pioneers with 16 digs. Ritenour finished with a pair of blocks.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 3) when rival Muskingum University visits Ban Johnson Arena for a 7 p.m. match.
