HIRAM, Ohio — Marietta College scored a pair of second half goals to beat Hiram College 2-0 Tuesday (Sept. 26) evening in men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 6-2-1 on the season, while the Terriers slip to 2-7-0 overall.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) posted his fifth shutout of the season. The senior has not allowed a goal this season in 488-plus minutes in goal. He recorded three saves against Hiram.
Marietta's defense allowed the Terriers just a single shot in the second half and only five total for the match. The MC back line includes
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta),
Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson),
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). The quartet has helped the Pioneers to seven shutouts this season.
After a scoreless first half,
Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) tallied the game winner with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute. It was the freshman's first career goal.
Tom Sloan (Stockport, England/Wilmslow) gave the Pioneers some breathing room with a goal in the 82nd minute. He notched his third goal of the season with an assist from
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton).
For the match, Marietta outshot the Terriers 15-5.The Pioneers took sic corner kicks to just one for Hiram.
Marietta opens OAC play at Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday (Sept. 30). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
