BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College scored three goals in less than four minutes of the second half en route to a 5-2 win over Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (Sept. 30) evening in men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace falls to 4-6-1 on the season and 0-1 in the OAC.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the second half,
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) leveled the match with a goal in the 51st minute.
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) picked up the assist on the equalizer.
Marietta took control of the match two goals seconds apart in the 56th minute.
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) scored with an assist from
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and then
Tom Sloan (Stockport, England/Wilmslow) notched an unassisted goal making it 4-2.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 5-2 with the help of a BW own goal in the 87th minute. Sloan hit a rocket that deflected off a Yellow Jacket defender and into the goal.
Baldwin Wallace grabbed the lead with a perfectly executed corner kick in the 20th minute. Timmy Jonas dropped the corner into the six-yard box where Rafael Davalos headed it past Marietta keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut).
The Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 in the 28th minute. Bryce Posner found Danny Ruple on the right side of 18-yard box. Ruple dribbled into the box and fired a bullet inside the far post for the goal.
Marietta almost found itself down by three goals. But BW's third goal was waved off for an offside call. The Pioneers got on the board shortly after the near miss.
Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) took possession of the ball deep in the BW half of he field and quickly fed the ball to
Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Maher went upper-90 inside the far post for his first goal of the season. The Pioneers trailed 2-1 at halftime.
For the match, Marietta outshot the Yellow Jackets 12-9. Baldwin Wallace had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Despite surrendering his firsts two goals of the season, Sholl improves to 5-0-1 in goal. He recorded a pair of saves in the match. Ryan Asbury had one save innet for the Yellow Jackets.
Marietta plays at rival Muskingum on Tuesday (Oct. 3). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
