MARIETTA, Ohio — Washington and Jefferson scored two shorthanded goals to beat Marietta College 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 23) afternoon in men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 5-2-1 overall, while the Presidents improve to 6-2 on the season.
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) gave Marietta a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 26th minute. He pulled the trigger from just outside the 18-yard box and beat the W&J keeper in the lower right corner of the net.
Things looked bleak for Washington and Jefferson when, trailing by a goal, they had a player red carded and sent off with 2:30 remaining in the match. But the Pioneers were whistled for a foul giving W&J a free kick from just across the midfield line with less than a minute on the clock.
Matt Prezioso took the free kick and placed a perfect ball inside the 6-yard box. Garrett French got his head on Prezioso's pass and flicked it by Marietta keeper
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) to level the match at 1-1 with 44 seconds left in regulation.
Neither team scored in the first overtime period. Marietta held possession for most of the 10 minutes and fired off three shots, two on goal. President keeper Nick Stasko made a pair of saves in the period.
W&J couldn't get a shot off in the first overtime period but needed only one shot attempt in the second extra period to grab the victory. Alex Bout sent a long pass to the top of the 18-yard box where Jacob Fetterman controlled it and created a one-on-one with Penquite. Fetterman slipped the ball inside the left post for the game winner.
For the match, Marietta outshot the Presidents 14-12. The Pioneers held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Penquite had seven saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Stasko had five for Washington and Jefferson.
Marietta plays its final non-conference match on Tuesday (Sept. 26) at Hiram College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
