MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team defeated Geneva College 1-0 Wednesday (Sept. 20) evening at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers are now 2-3-2 overall, while the Golden Tornadoes fall to 2-5 on the season.
"This was a good step forward for a young team," Marietta head coach
Tracy Blasius said. "We need to do a better job of capitalizing on early opportunities to put the match away. But I'm proud of our efforts defensively while playing a man down for most of the second half. We handled that adversity well."
Marietta dominated possession in the early going but was not able to create many scoring opportunities. The Pioneers got on the board in the 40th minute when
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) rifled one in from 30 yards out.
Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) took possession of the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and played it back to Dorr. Dorr hit a laser past a diving Dani Lincoln in goal for Geneva and just inside the right post. It was her second goal of the season.
Things got interesting for Marietta when the Pioneers had a player red-carded and sent off in the 54th minute. Forced to play a man down the rest of the match, Marietta's defense rose to the occasion to preserve the clean sheet.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and made four saves. Lincoln recorded six saves in net for the Tornadoes.
Marietta outshot Geneva 15-8 for the match including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Tornadoes were awarded six corner kicks, while the Pioneers took a pair of corners.
Marietta hits the road this weekend for a 4 p.m. game at Earlham College on Saturday (Sept. 23).
