MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team split a pair of matches in the River City Classic on Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon. The Pioneers are 2-3 overall on the season.
Mount St. Joseph (2-2 overall) swept the Pioneers 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16 in the first match of the day. Marietta bounced back to defeat Thiel (1-3 overall) in a five-set thriller. MC posted set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-11 for the win.
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) pounded out 16 kills to lead the Pioneer attack against Thiel. Freshman
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) had 11 kills, while
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison),
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) and
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) had seven kills apiece.
Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) and
Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) split the setting duties and finished with 22 and 17 assists, respectively.
Defensively, Arrowood and Ritenour had four blocks in the match. Denallo posted a team-best 20 digs.
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had 19 digs from the libero position, while Gerber added 15 and Wiseman 10.
Irish had a team-high eight kills in the loss to Mount St. Joseph. Gerber posted 15 assists and Peters had 13 digs.
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 6) with a 7 p.m. match at Westminster College.
