NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Westminster College swept a non-conference volleyball match from Marietta College Wednesday (Sept. 6) evening posting set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 28-26. The Pioneers slip to 2-4 overall, while Westminster improves to 4-1 on the season.
The first set was close throughout with Westminster holding a small lead most of the way. Marietta managed to grab the 18-17 only to see the Titans finish the set with an 8-1 run.
Marietta fell behind early in the second set and never recovered. Westminster led by as many as 11 points, 16-5, and easily secured the second set and a 2-0 lead.
A kill from
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) gave Marietta a 23-20 lead in the third set. After trading points, the Pioneers had a 24-21 advantage and three set points. Westminster scored the next four points to go in front 25-24.
Marietta responded with two straight points and again served for the set. The Titans got a kill from Reilly DeGeorge to tie the set, 26-26. Westminster took advantage of two Pioneers errors on the next two points to win the set and the match.
Irish led the Pioneer attack with six kills.
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) chipped in with five kills.
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) dished out 10 assists. Defensively,
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) and
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) notched 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
Up next for the Pioneers is the Oberlin College Tournament this weekend. Marietta plays Defiance College on Friday (Sept. 8) at 4 p.m. and the take on Oberlin and Mount Aloysius College on Saturday (Sept. 9) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
