OBERLIN, Ohio — Oberlin College defeated Marietta College by the score of 4-0 Friday (Sept. 15) evening in women's soccer. The loss drops Marietta to 1-3-2 overall. Oberlin stays perfect on the season at 6-0.
The Yeomen came into the match averaging nearly six goals per match in their first five games this season, but Marietta held them to just one goal in the first half. Oberlin broke things open in the second period scoring twice in the first eight minutes.
Gwennie Gardiner put Oberlin on top with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. She added her second unassisted goal of the match in the 52nd minute. Gardiner then picked up an assist when Lucy Fredell found the back of the net in the 54th minute.
Izzy Rosenstein closed out the scoring for Oberlin in the 74th minute with an assist from Brittany Mendez.
Freshman
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) started in goal for the Pioneers and made eight saves in 82 minutes.
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) played the final eight minutes and posted four saves.
Jordyn Morris went the distance in goal for Oberlin. She recorded two saves in the shutout.
For the match, Oberlin outshot the Pioneers 28-5, including a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Yeomen took five corners, while Marietta had a pair.
Marietta returns home to host Geneva College on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m. in Don Drumm Stadium.
