MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept a non-conference volleyball match from visiting Franciscan University Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers posted set scores of 25-16, 25-9 and 25-14 improving to 5-5 on the season. The Barons slip to 1-4 overall.
Marietta used a 6-0 run midway through the first set to go on top 17-10. The Pioneers finished of the set by scoring the final five points including a pair of kills from
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace).
The Navy Blue and White led the second set from start to finish. Franciscan grabbed an early lead in the third set. But three straight attacking errors by the Barons contributed to a 7-0 Marietta run as the Pioneers turned a one-point deficit into a six-point lead, 12-6.
Marietta built a 10-point lead, 20-10, with the help of two kills from
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence).
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) put away the final point of the match with her third kill of the night.
Denallo and
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) led Marietta with seven kills each. Ritenour chipped in with six kills.
Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) dished out eight assists, while
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) had six assists apiece.
Defensively, Denallo recorded a team-best eight digs. Haas posted three blocks and Irish and
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) notched two blocks each.
Marietta plays in the Bluffton Fall Classic this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 15-16). The Pioneers play Allegheny on Friday at 6 p.m. and then take on Trine and Bluffton on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
