Volleyball goes 1-2 on first day of River City Classic

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College went 1-2 on the first day of the River City Volleyball Classic Friday (Sept 1) in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers downed Emory & Henry 3-1 and lost to Hiram and Transylvania by identical 3-0 scores.

Marietta defeated Emory & Henry 25-17, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-18. Three Pioneers tallied double figures in kills with Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence), Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) each posting 10 kills. Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) and Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) finished with nine kills each.

Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) had a team-best 29 assists, while Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) dished out 16 assists. Libero Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had 24 digs on the back line. Denallo notched 21 digs and Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley) added 11.

Hiram pulled out close wins in the first two sets en route to a sweep of the Pioneers. The Terriers posted a 25-23, 25-22 and 25-14 victory.

Haas led the MC attack with seven kills. Nader had 11 assists and Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) chipped in with 10. Peters again anchored the defense with 22 digs, while Denallo added 17 digs.

In the final match of the evening, Transylvania downed Marietta 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12.

Denallo had seven kills and 12 digs to lead the Navy Blue and White. Gerber and Wiseman each had nine assists.

Marietta wraps up play in the River City Classic on Saturday (Sept. 2). The Pioneers play Mount St. Joseph at 1 p.m. and Thiel at 3 p.m.
