Women's Soccer bags the Bearcats 3-1 in season opener

LATROBE, Pa. — Three different Pioneers scored as the Marietta College Women's Soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 3-1 victory at Saint Vincent College Friday (Sept. 1) afternoon.

"We played well today. Obviously we have a lot to work on, but it always feels good to start the season with a win," Marietta head coach Tracy Blasius said. "Our offense is starting to learn to play together. We've got freshmen in some key positions and it was great to see them start to get some confidence."

Sophomore midfielder Sophia Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) tallied the first goal of the season for the Navy Blue and White sending a shot over the Bearcat keeper in the 39th minute. Freshman Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) sent a through ball into the box where Moise finished it off for the goal.

Saint Vincent leveled the match just before the horn sounded to end the first half. Kristin Marsh dropped a cross into Maggie Nelson who headed the ball into the left corner of the net in the 44th minute.

LaGreca picked up her second assist of the day seven minutes into the second half. LaGreca fed the ball to sophomore Kayla Tomlin (Sardinia, Ohio/Eastern) for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Freshman Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley) iced the game when she notched her first career goal in the 64th minute. Williams found herself all alone inside the 18-yard box and made the Bearcats pay with the unassisted goal.

Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) made her collegiate debut in goal for the Pioneers and went the full 90 minutes. The freshman made five saves and allowed only one goal. Savanah Gerstnecker went the distance in goal for Saint Vincent and recorded two saves in the match.

Marietta stays on the road for a 1 p.m. match at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Saturday (Sept. 2).
