MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Marietta College Wednesday (April 19) afternoon. The Crusaders edged the Pioneers 6-5 in game one and then poured it on with a 12-2 victory in five innings in game two.
Marietta falls to 11-23 on the season and 3-11 in the OAC. Capital improves to 21-13 overall and 9-5 in conference games.
The Crusaders scored two runs in the first and two more in the third inning of game one en route to a 5-0 lead. Kristen Mellott smacked a two-run double in the top of the first, while Bailey Walter launched a solo home run in the third.
Marietta responded with four runs in the home half of the fourth inning cutting the CU lead to one, 5-4. The Pioneers strung together five hits in the inning including an RBI triple from
Ariann Barile (Roaming Shores, Ohio/Jefferson), a run-scoring single off the bat of
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and a two-run single from
Brianna Finck (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville).
Kayla Wild took over in the circle for starter Amber Martinelli and ended the Pioneer rally. Wild (8-2) would get the win after throwing 3.2 innings one one-run relief. She allowed four hits and struck out four. Martinelli went 3.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.
Capital added one run in the fourth and fifth innings extending its lead to 6-4. Marietta managed to push one across in the sixth when Finck scored on a triple from
Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield).
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (6-10) started and took the loss for Marietta. She tossed 3.2 innings and was charged with five runs on five hits with five walks issued.
Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg Franklin) pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one run on six hits, while
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) retired the only batter she faced.
Finck led the Pionner offense going 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Prologo and Barile each had two hits in the game, including an RBI triple.
Capital scored five runs in the first inning of game two and never looked back. The Crusaders knocked White out of the circle after just two-thirds of an inning. White (3-10) gave up five runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Kach worked 3.0 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits, while
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) threw 1.1 innings. Tom allowed one run on three hits.
Marietta took advantage of two CU errors in the second inning to push a pair of unearned runs across the plate. Prologo picked up MC's lone RBI with a single through the left side of the infield.
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) was the only Pioneer with two hits in the game.
