Heidelberg takes two from Softball

TIFFIN, Ohio — Heidelberg University posted a pair of shutout victories over Marietta College Friday (April 14) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference softball action. The Student Princes downed Marietta 3-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

Heidelberg improves to 20-9-1 on the season and stays in the hunt for the OAC regular season title with a 9-2-1 league record. Marietta falls to 11-21 overall and 3-9 in conference games.

Erin Chapman (10-4) limited Marietta to three hits in the first game shutout. She walked three and struck out two in 7.0 innings of work.

Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (6-9) took the loss. Kach pitched 6.0 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits. She walked one and struck out two.

Heidelberg got on the board in the third inning. Taylor Hicks tripled and then scored on a bunt by Renee Lovett. Abbey McKee doubled the Berg lead with a solo home run in the fourth. The Student Princes added an unearned run in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.

Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had a double for the Pioneers, while Stephanie Zentz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) each had a single.

In the second game, Shelby Miller drove in all four of Heidelberg's runs going 3-for-4 in the nitecap.

Hicks led off the bottom of the first with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Following a ground out, Miller plated Hicks with an infield single.

Miller lined a two-run single to center field in the fourth inning. Hicks and Randi Kelsey scored on the base hit.

Heidelberg loaded the bases in the sixth with three infield singles. Miller followed with a single to right field scoring Abby Barno for a 4-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Moore (9-4) picked up the complete-game shutout victory. She threw 7.0 innings and allowed six hits and one walk. She struck out five Pioneers.

Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (3-9) got the loss. She started and worked 5.1 innings giving up four runs in nine hits. White walked three and struck out three. Kach retired both Berg batters she faced in the sixth inning.

Klinchock finished 2-for-3 with a double. Zentz had a pair of singles.
