Runs hard to come by as Softball falls twice at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Otterbein University remains in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference softball standings after taking a doubleheader from Marietta College Wednesday (April 12) afternoon. The Cardinals posted 3-0 and 3-1 wins improving to 9-1 in the OAC and 24-5 overall. Marietta falls to 11-19 on the season and 3-7 in the OAC.

Gabby Johnson (10-0) remained perfect on the season with a two-hit shutout in the first game. She walked two and struck out seven in 7.0 innings of work.

Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (6-8) went the distance in a losing effort for the Pioneers. She threw 6.0 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Kach walked two and struck out six.

Doubles from Alyson Shaw and Bailey McElwain gave Otterbein a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Cardinals added one in the fifth and another in the sixth inning for the 3-0 win.

Cierra Bloom (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) and Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) each had a single for Marietta.

The Pioneers banged out eight hits in the second game, including three from Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), but managed just one run. Brianna Finck (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville) drove in Rockocy with an infield single in the second game to tie the score, 1-1.

Shaw put Otterbein in front with an RBI single in the fourth. Shaw knocked in Chey Rowe, who was pinch running after Kasey Morris reached on a base hit up the middle. Morris scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to extend Otterbein's lead to 3-1.

Morris (5-2) went the distance in the circle allowing one Pioneer run on eight hits in 7.0 innings. She walked two and struck out four.

Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (3-8) started and got the loss for the Pioneers. She worked 5.1 innings and was charged with three runs on nine hits. White walked three and struck out three. Kach retired both batters she faced in the sixth inning.
