ADA, Ohio — Ohio Northern University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Friday (March 24) afternoon. The Polar Bears posted a 5-inning 10-1 win in the first game and then shut out MC 5-0 in game two.
Ohio Northern (15-1 overall, 2-0 OAC) erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away from Marietta (6-12, 0-2) in the first game.
Stephanie Zentz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drove in
Ariann Barile (Roaming Shores, Ohio/Jefferson) in the top of the second for Marietta's lone run of the game.
The Polar Bears sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning. Gabby Stewart delivered a three-run double, while Gia Saturday smacked a three-run home run to centerfield.
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (3-4) took the loss. Kach started and pitched 2.1 innings giving up 10 runs on nine hits. She walked two and struck out one.
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) worked the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one base hit.
Kirsten Lightel (8-0) remained perfect on the season scattering four hits and allowing Marietta one run. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) went 2-for-3 with a double. Barile also doubled in the game for Marietta.
Kaitlin Surdej (7-1) tossed the complete game shutout for ONU in game two. She threw 7.0 innings and allowed seven hits and two walks.
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (1-5) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers. She gave up five runs on nine hits. White walked one and struck out two.
Stewart drove in Jenna Hollar with ONU's first run of the game in the first inning. Hollar led off with a single and stole second base. She moved to third on a ground out and then scored when Stewart grounded out to the shortstop.
Stewart added an RBI single in the third, while Leanna Henry knocked in the Polar Bears' third run of the game. Anna Martin and Stewart each had run-scoring singles in the fifth inning.
Cierra Bloom (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) finished 2-for-3 for Marietta, while
Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) added a double.
Due to the weather forecast on Sunday, the doubleheader between Marietta and Kenyon College will be played on Saturday (March 25). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Marietta Field. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
