KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team suffered a pair of close losses Monday (March 13) at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers fell to Carroll University, 1-0, in the morning and then lost to Illinois College, 5-3, in the afternoon.
Marietta slips to 3-5 overall. Carroll improves to 6-3 on the season, while Illinois College is 4-2 overall.
Carroll scored the only run of the game in the first inning and then held on for the victory. Megan Kohlmetz led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Maggie Erdman. Two walks loaded the bases with one out.
Marietta pitcher
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) struck out the next batter and was one out away from escaping unscathed. Haylee Arroyo delivered the two-out base hit through the left side of the infield scoring Kohlmetz with the winning run.
Kach (1-1) allowed just three hits in 6.0 innings of work. She walked two and struck out seven.
Carroll pitcher Amanda Osterhus (3-1) tossed the complete game shutout scattering two hits and striking out nine MC hitters. She walked two.
Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and
Brey Mays (Bloomingdale, Ohio/Indian Creek) each singled in the game for Marietta.
Illinois College scored two runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Brady and Koehler each had run-scoring doubles in the sixth propelling the Lady Blues to the victory.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first and another in the second inning.
Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) blasted a two-run home run in the first inning and
Cierra Bloom (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) had an RBI double in the second giving Marietta a 3-1 lead.
Illinois plated a run in the third and then tied the game with another in the fourth.
Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg Franklin) (2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief of starter
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton). White went 3.1 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits. LaRocca allowed two runs on four base hits in 2.1 innings of work. Kach allowed one hit over the final 1.1 innings.
Maddie Nichols started for the Lady Blues and worked 1.1 innings giving up three runs five hits. DJ Troli threw 3.0 innings of shutout relief before turning the game over to Jess Feig. Feig (1-0) tossed 2.2 innings and did not allow a base hit.
Klinchock and Ali Prolog each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
