FROSTBURG, Md. — The No. 13 ranked Marietta College men's basketball team shot a sizzling 70% from the floor in the second half to defeat Frostburg State University, 91-77, Tuesday (Nov. 21) evening. The Pioneers improve to 3-0 on the season, while Frostburg State falls to 1-2 overall.
Senior
Dillon Young (Laurelville, Ohio/Logan Elm) drained five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points leading five Pioneers in double-figures.
Avery Williams (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) and
DeVaughn Wingard (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Orange) scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Anthony Wallace (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) chipped in with 12 points and
Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich./Holly) added 11. Freshman
Tim Kreeger (Delphos, Ohio/Delphos St. Johns) came off the bench to grab a game-high nine rebounds.
Frostburg scored the first seven points of the game as the Pioneers got off to a slow start. Wingard hit a pair of free throws to cap a 9-0 Marietta run giving the Pioneers a three-point lead, 14-11.
Marietta extended the lead to nine, 35-26, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout with 6:18 left in the first half. Frostburg regrouped and went on a 16-2 run to retake the lead. The Bobcats went into halftime leading 46-44.
After the break Young nailed a pair of early three-pointers triggering a 14-4 Pioneer run to put MC in front for good. Marietta continued to pull away and lead by as many as 19 points, 85-66, in the second half.
Tyler Michael led the Bobcats with 18 points. Daniel Alexander notched 16 points and eight boards, while Darren Campbell sank three from behind the arc and finished with 16 points.
For the game, Marietta shot 56.1% (37-of-66) from the floor, 40.0% (8-of-20) from three-point range and 52.9% (9-of-17) at the free throw line. Frostburg was 26-of-66 (39.4%) from the floor, 6-of-20 (30.0%) behind the arc and 19-of-26 (73.1%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Frostburg, 48-33. Marietta committed 17 turnovers, while the Bobcats turned the ball over 15 times.
Marietta is back in action on Sunday (Nov. 26) when the Pioneers play at Bethany College. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
