MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College enjoyed its greatest offensive output in 10 years as the Pioneers defeated rival Muskingum University 5-1 Wednesday (Oct. 4) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 5-4-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
Marietta's five goals are the most for the Pioneers since beating Heidelberg 8-0 in October of 2007. Marietta scored five or more goals three times during the 2007 season.
Freshman
Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) got things rolling for the Pioneers with a goal in the 17th minute.
Sophia Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) dribbled to the end line on the left side of the goal and passed the ball to LaGreca at the top of the six-yard box. LaGreca placed the ball inside the near post for her second goal of the season.
Muskingum leveled the match in the 36th minute. Miranda Bishop took the ball into the box drawing the Pioneer defense to her. She dropped the ball back to Tori Stuard who buried the shot into the upper right corner of the net.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, it appeared that the Pioneers would have to settle for a tie score at halftime. But a Muskingum turnover inside its own 18-yard box proved costly. Moise took possession of the ball and slipped it by the Muskie keeper with just 17 seconds left in the opening period for a 2-1 Marietta lead.
The Pioneers added three second-half insurance goals. Freshman
Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley) scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute, her third of the season. Williams dribbled around the Muskie defense and placed her shot over the keeper in the upper left corner of the net.
15 seconds later Moise made it 4-1 with her second goal of the match.
Halie Hill (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) sent a long through ball to Moise as she raced into the 18-yard box. Moise beat the keeper to the lower corner for her fourth goal of the season.
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) capped the match off with a goal in the 76th minute.
Embrey Roberts (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) took a throw in from Williams and dished the ball to Dorr on the left side of the 18-yard box. Dorr fired a shot inside the far post for her third goal of the year.
While the Pioneer offense was firing on all cylinders, the defense was frustrating the Muskingum forwards. The Pioneer back line is anchored by sophomores
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) and
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and freshmen
Kate Dreas (Independence, Ky./Holy Cross) and
Embrey Roberts (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta).
Marietta freshman goalkeeper
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) posted a pair of saves in the match. Katie Bodenmiller had seven saves in goal for the Muskies, while Jasmine Love had four saves.
Marietta outshot the Muskies 25-6 for the match, including a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pioneers took three corner kicks, while Muskingum had none.
Marietta travels to John Carroll University on Saturday (Oct. 7) for a 4 p.m. match.
