MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 20 Ohio Northern University swept Marietta College, 3-0, in the regular season finale for both schools Friday (Oct. 27) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action. The loss drops Marietta to 11-17 overall and 3-6 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 25-4 on the season and 8-1 in the conference.
The Polar Bears posted set scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-16 in the victory. Ohio Northern raced out to a 10-1 lead in the first set and never looked back. Marietta held small leads early in the second and third sets, but couldn't keep the momentum.
Senior
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) finished her career in Ban Johnson Arena with a team-high nine kills and two blocks.
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence), also a senior, added seven kills and a match-high 18 digs.
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) dished out seven assists.
Senior defensive specialists
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) and
Amber Mauric (Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) finished with 17 and seven digs, respectively.
Marietta will be the No. 7 seed in next week's OAC Tournament. The Pioneers travel to Ada to face No. 2 seed Ohio Northern in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday (Oct. 31) for a 7 p.m. match.
