MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University used a second half scoring outburst to defeat Marietta College 4-1 Wednesday (Oct. 18) afternoon in women's soccer action. The Pioneers fall to 6-7-2 overall and 2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improves to 7-6-1 on the season and 5-1 in the OAC.
The first 45 minutes was evenly matched with Capital taking six shots and Marietta firing off four. Neither team was able to find the back of the net and the match was scoreless at halftime.
Capital turned up the pressure in the second half and controlled possession of the ball for most of the period. The Crusaders finally got on the board in the 63rd minute. Jordan Fike took control of the ball at the top of the six-yard box and placed the ball inside the far post for her third goal of the season.
Fike picked up an assist on the Crusaders' second goal. Fike passed the ball back to Mary Bushee who placed the ball into the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute.
Marietta cut the Capital lead in half a minute later.
Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley) dribbled through several Crusader defenders and got the ball past CU keeper Hannah Klotzsche for her fourth goal of the season.
The Crusaders put the match away with two late goals. Chloe Brown scored an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute and Bridget Mallin added an insurance goal in the 86th minute.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) started in goal for the Pioneers and allowed two goals while making eight saves in 79 minutes.
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) was charged with a pair of goals and made a pair of saves over the final 11 minutes.
Capital also split the goalkeeping duties. Kelly Bachman played the first half and had two saves. Hannah Klotzsche had one save in the second half.
Marietta hits the road this Saturday (Oct. 21) for a 1 p.m. match at Heidelberg University.
