Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball easily dispatches Wilmington 3-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept Wilmington College in straight sets Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball. The Pioneers posted set scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20 for the victory.

Marietta improves to 10-13 overall and 2-3 in the OAC. The Quakers fall to 4-17 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Outside hitter Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) ignited the Pioneer attack slamming 18 kills in the match. The senior was a one-woman wrecking crew in the third set notching nine kills in the frame. She took 31 swings and recorded a .387 attack percentage on the day.

Fellow senior Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) finished with 11 kills and a match-high 19 digs. Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) and Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) had six and five kills, respectively. Ritenour added three service aces and four blocks.

Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) and Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) split the setting duties for the Pioneers. Wiseman dished out 22 assists, while Nader had 20. Wiseman posted nine digs along the back line and Nader added seven digs.

Marietta used a 10-1 in the first set to turn a three-point deficit, 5-8, into a six-point lead, 15-9. Once in control the Pioneers cruised to the 25-21 set victory.

Wilmington grabbed the early advantage in the second set leading 8-5. Marietta gradually worked back into the set knotting the score at 12-12. The Pioneers built a small two-point lead and then finished the set off by winning the final four points.

Irish took over in the third set. With the score tied 17-18, the senior recorded four kills on the next five points to put the Pioneers in front 21-17. Denallo sealed the victory with a kill to end the match.

Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 17) when Capital University visits Ban Johnson Arena for a 7 p.m. match.
