WILMINGTON, Ohio — Treshaun Pate recorded a hat trick as Wilmington College defeated Marietta College in overtime by the score of 3-2 Saturday (Oct. 14) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer. The loss drops Marietta to 9-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the OAC. Wilmington improves to 7-6-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the OAC.
Pate scored the game winner just over six minutes into the first overtime period. Colton Smith picked up the assist on the golden goal.
After a scoreless first half, Pate needed just 28 seconds of the second half to find the back of the net. He scored an unassisted goal to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.
Marietta leveled the match in the 72nd minute.
Tom Sloan (Stockport, England/Wilmslow) scored an unassisted goal for the equalizer. It was his sixth goal of the season.
Five minutes later sophomore
Matt Montgomery (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) put the Pioneers in front 2-1 with his first career goal.
Will Walther (Pataskala, Ohio/Saint Charles Prep) was credited with the assist.
The Pioneer lead didn't last long. Pate, with an assist from JC Brewer, tallied his second goal of the night in the 79th minute.
Neither team scored over the final 11-plus minutes of regulation sending the game into overtime tied at 2-2.
Marietta fired off three quick shots in the extra period but they all sailed high over the cross bar. Pate's game winner was the only shot Wilmington needed to secure the victory.
The Pioneers dominated play for most of the match outshooting Wilmington 19-7, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Marietta took six corners to just three for the Quakers.
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) went the distance in goal for Marietta and did not have a save in the match. Chris Bourque registered eight saves in goal for Wilmington.
Marietta will look to get back on track this Tuesday (Oct. 17) when the Pioneers travel to Capital University for a 7 p.m. match.
