COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College and Capital University battled to a double overtime scoreless draw Tuesday (Oct. 17) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer. The Pioneers move to 9-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the OAC. Capital is now 9-5-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in the OAC.
"We put forth a tremendous effort to get this road point," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "I'm happy to see us play the way we did after Saturday's disappointing result. However, this point means nothing if we don't build on it over the next 10 days."
The shutout was Marietta's eighth clean sheet of the season. The Pioneer single season record is nine set in 2002.
Marietta keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) posted his sixth shutout of the season. The senior recorded seven saves, including three in overtime. Sholl's back line included
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta),
Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson),
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest).
Justin Niswonger went the distance in goal for the Crusaders. He also made seven saves in the match.
Capital outshot the Pioneers 18-16 for the match. Each team had seven shots on goal. The Crusaders were awarded six corners to just two for Marietta.
