ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College in straight sets Tuesday (Oct. 10) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action. The loss drops Marietta to 9-13 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 19-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
Mount Union posted set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18. The Purple Raiders scored the first five points of the match and never trailed in the first set.
Marietta stayed within a couple of points of Mount Union through the first half of the second set. The Purple Raiders used an 8-2 run to pull away and secure the second set.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set behind a pair of kills from
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison). Mount Union battled back to even the frame at 8-8 and then used a 9-2 run to squash any hopes of a Marietta rally.
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) had 10 kills to lead the Pioneers. Arrowood finished with seven kills, while
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) and
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) had six each.
Aly Wiseman (London, Ohio/Bishop Ready) dished out a team-high 10 assists.
Arrowood and Irish had two blocks apiece, while libero
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) recorded 10 digs. Denallo added eight digs.
Marietta returns home to host Wilmington College this Saturday (Oct. 14) for a 1 p.m. match.
