MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University defeated Marietta College by the score of 54-41 Wednesday (Jan. 18) in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball. The loss drops Marietta to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the OAC. The Crusaders improve to 7-9 on the season and 3-6 in the OAC.
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) led the Pioneers with nine points off the bench.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) scored six points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) finished with six points and four boards.
Ellie Wachtman paced the Crusaders with 11 points and seven rebounds. Meredith Ovies chipped in with 10 points, while Annika Wachtman recorded seven rebounds.
Capital led the entire first quarter and took a 16-11 lead into the second period. Burkhardt scored on a layup with 6:48 left in the half to even the game at 20-20. Following a Crusader bucket,
Maddy Worden (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) nailed a three-pointer to give the Pioneers their first lead of the night, 23-22, with 5:34 left in the half.
An old-fashioned three-point play from Lett pushed the Marietta lead to four points, 26-22. But Capital scored the final six points of the period and led 28-26 at halftime.
Capital took advantage of a four-plus minute scoring drought for the Pioneers pushing the margin to seven points, 41-34, with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter.
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) drained a three-pointer in the final seconds of the period to make it 41-37.
The Crusader defense held Marietta to just four points in the final period as Capital opened a double-digit lead. Capital led by as many as 14 points, 53-39, with 1:15 left in the game.
For the game, Marietta shot 28.1% (16-of-57) from the floor, 22.2% (4-of-18) from three-point range and 71.4% (5-of-7) at the line. Capital was 21-of-48 (43.8%) from the floor, 0-of-5 (0.0%) behind the arc and 12-of-15 (80.0%) at the line.
The Crusaders outrebounded Marietta, 40-31. The Pioneers committed 20 turnovers, while Capital turned the ball over 19 times.
