MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team defeated John Carroll University by the score of 65-58 Saturday (Jan. 21) afternoon in ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers improve to 10-7 overall and 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll slips to 4-13 overall and 2-8 in league play.
Sophomore
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) led the Pioneers with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) chipped in with 12 points and seven assists, while
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) added nine markers.
Katlyn Spahar paced the Blue Streaks with a game-high 26 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three Pioneer shots. Kahrin Spear and Shmoo Pryor scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Pryor pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Marietta scored the first nine points of the game and pushed the margin as high as 12 points, 16-4, in the first quarter. The Blue Streaks overcame a slow start and trimmed the deficit to five points with two minutes left in the period.
The Pioneers ended the quarter on a 6-0 run on a layup from Burkhardt and a pair of jumpers from Borich. Marietta led 22-11 after the first period.
Marietta extended the lead to 14 points in the earlier going of the second quarter. But John Carroll battled back and cut the Pioneer lead to six at halftime, 31-25.
John Carroll heated up in the third quarter and took its first lead of the day, 38-35, on a three-point from Pryor at the 6:16 mark. The teams exchanged small leads the rest of the quarter and JCU led by three, 47-44, heading into the fourth quarter.
Spear scored the first basket of the fourth quarter extending the JCU lead to five points. Marietta answered with a 6-0 run capped by a layup from Burkhardt to reclaim the lead midway through the period.
Spahar put the Blue Streaks back in front with a three-pointer. Borich drained a three-ball at the 3:10 mark to put the Pioneers back in front for good. John Carroll was forced to foul down the stretch and Marietta hit 6-of-8 free throws to secure the victory.
For the game, Marietta shot 37.5% (24-of-64) from the floor, 25.0% (4-of-16) from the-point range and 56.5% (13-of-23) at the free throw line. John Carroll was 18-of-73 (24.7%) from the floor, 5-of-22 (22.7%) behind the arc and 17-of-27 (63.0%) at the charity stripe.
The Blue Streaks edged Marietta on the glass, 54-51. John Carroll turned the ball over 16 times, while the Pioneers committed 15 turnovers.
