GRANVILLE, Ohio — As the late, great Yogi Berra said, "This is like déjà vu all over again."
For the second straight year the Marietta College men's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime at Denison University. The Pioneers (1-1 overall) allowed the game winning goal just over eight minutes into the first overtime period Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon.
Marietta went on the attack early and grabbed the lead with a goal at the 7:00 mark of the first half. Senior
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) threaded a perfect pass through the Big Red defense creating a one-on-one for
Adam Fox (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and Denison keeper Andrew Shediac. Fox was able to beat Shediac for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Pioneer lead.
Denison (1-1 overall) refocused and increased the pressure on both ends of the field. The Big Red defense didn't allow another Marietta shot in the opening period while the offense fired off eight shots prior to halftime.
One of those eight shots found the back of the net. Jasdeep Khaira took a free kick from about 20 yards and slipped the ball by Marietta keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) for the equalizer in the 37th minute.
Each team took five shots in the second half but none resulted in a goal sending the match into overtime. Marietta had a chance to take the lead midway through the second half when
Josh Baskind (Solon, Ohio/Solon) fired a shot that hit the crossbar.
In overtime, Denison took an early shot that went wide and earned a corner kick that the Pioneers successfully defended before Henry Pohlman tallied the winning goal in the 99th minute. Pohlman scored the decisive goal with an assist from Kennedy Kommor, who scored both of DU's goals in last year's win over the Pioneers.
Sholl went the distance in goal for Marietta making five saves. Shediac also played the entire game and had two saves for the Big Red.
Denison outshot the Pioneers 15-6, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red took seven corners to just two for Marietta.
Marietta is back on the road Wednesday (Sept. 7) when the Pioneers travel to Bethany College for a 4 p.m. match. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
