BETHANY, W.Va. — The Marietta College men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and beat Bethany College 3-1 Wednesday (Sept. 7) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the season, while Bethany falls to 0-2-1 overall.
"This was a tough win. They came to play and caused us a lot of issues," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We sorted it out and our freshmen came through for us. I don't think we win this game a year ago. We found a way to win."
The Bison struck first in the 21st minute. Jack Waters scored an unassisted goal when the Marietta keeper allowed him to get deflect the ball into the net.
It didn't take long for the Pioneers to respond. Just over three minutes later
Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson) sent the ball into the 18-yard box to
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) who finished it off for the equalizer.
The match remained tied at 1-1 until midway through the second half. Freshman
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored the game winner in the 69th minute when he buried the ball in the back of the net. Fellow rookie
Austin Fligor (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.
Sebastian Parra (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers posting seven saves. Callum Appleby recorded nine saves in goal for the Bison.
For the game, Marietta outshot Bethany 22-15. Each team took seven corner kicks.
Marietta returns home to host the 31st annual Marietta College Classic this weekend. The Pioneers play Adrian College on Saturday (Sept. 10) at 3 p.m. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
