WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team split a pair of nonconference matches at Wilmington College Friday (Sept. 30) evening. Marietta swept Wilmington 3-0 before dropping a 3-2 decision to Albion College.
The Pioneers posted game scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-15 in the win over Wilmington (1-12 overall). Marietta used a balanced attack against the Quakers as six different Pioneers posted five or six kills in the match.
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta),
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and
Taylor Pennock (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) each had six kills.
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry),
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) and
Megan Hesson (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) all finished with five kills.
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) recorded 31 assists.
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) anchored the defense with a match-best 11 digs. Vodopich and Pennock notched eight digs apiece.
Marietta and Albion alternated game wins in the five-set second match. Albion (9-6 overall) pulled out the victory 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 23-25 and 15-4.
Barnes led all players with a match-high 18 kills. Vodopich and
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) chipped in with 12 kills each. Staten dished out 41 assists.
Four Pioneers finished with double digit digs led by Peters with 23. Vodopich had 20, while Denallo and Staten posted 17 and 11, respectively. Haas had a team-high five blocks and Irish turned back three Albion attacks.
