Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer stings the Yellow Jackets 3-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — Three different Pioneers scored goals as the Marietta College men's soccer team defeated Waynesburg University, 3-0, Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. Marietta improves to 5-4-1 with the win, while Waynesburg falls to 2-6-0 on the season.

"This was as complete of a performance that we have put together to date," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "It was not perfect, but I am pleased with our ball movement and our finishing was certainly improved. After two tough matches which were both losses it feels good to get back in the win column."

Waynesburg saw its best scoring opportunity of the match just minutes into the first half. Matt Porter sent a sharp header toward the goal that Marietta keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) managed to get a hand on and push over the crossbar.

Neither team managed a good scoring opportunity after Porter's header as both defenses controlled play the rest of the first half. The teams headed into halftime tied, 0-0.

Marietta went on the attack after the intermission. Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) fired off several shots in the opening minutes of the period and slipped one by the Waynesburg keeper in the 52nd minute. Alex Gruss (Portage, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) sent a thru ball to Rolfes in the box who tallied his third goal of the season.

The Pioneers doubled their lead in the 78th minute. Josh Baskind (Solon, Ohio/Solon) dropped a corner kick in front of the goal where Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) headed it home for a 2-0 lead. Baskind scored an unassisted goal at the 88:02 mark extending the lead to 3-0. It was the first goal of the season for both Huck and Baskind.

While the Marietta offense was firing on all cylinders on one of the field, MC's defense was posting its third clean sheet of the season. Huck, Noah Sellers (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands), Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) kept the heat off of Sholl in goal.

Sholl finished with two saves in his second shutout of the year. James Snyder had one save in net for the Waynesburg.

Marietta had a slim 10-9 edge in shots. The Pioneers took six corner kicks to only two for the Yellow Jackets.

Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Friday (Sept. 20) when Baldwin Wallace University comes to town for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
