MARIETTA, Ohio — Fifth-year senior
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) slipped a shot past the goalkeeper 7 minutes and 53 seconds into overtime giving Marietta College a thrilling 3-2 come from behind win over Baldwin Wallace University Sunday (Oct. 2) afternoon in Don Drumm Stadium.
"This was an effort that reflects the changes that are happening for MC soccer. I am so proud of the guys for not giving up," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "BW took it to us for long stretches, but we got that first goal and that changed the momentum."
The win improves Marietta to 6-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace slips to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
"Taylor stepped up and got it done like the leader he is," Bergin said. "On top of that we had some freshman grow up today and put tremendous efforts in. Without those freshman efforts, Taylor's heroics wouldn't have happened."
BW took advantage of a Pioneer mistake to grab an early lead. Marietta was whistled for a foul inside the box giving the Yellow Jackets a penalty kick in the 12th minute. Kurt Raney converted the penalty for a 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets carried the one goal lead into halftime as the BW defense limited Marietta's scoring opportunities.
Baldwin Wallace doubled its lead in the 52nd minute. Adam Grove sent a long cross from the left sideline to the top right corner of the 18-yard box where Danny Ruple was waiting. Ruple collected the ball and fired a shot inside the far post for his fifth goal of the season.
Marietta finally broke through with a beautiful goal from Reasoner at the 76:04 mark. Freshman
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) delivered a perfect cross to the center of the 6-yard box. Reasoner elevated above the BW defenders and headed the ball past BW keeper Patrick Mehal.
With the momentum on their side the Pioneers leveled the match at 2-2 two minutes later. Following a BW foul,
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) took the direct kick and dropped it right in front of the Yellow Jacket goal where freshman
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) deflected it into the back of the net with his chest.
Tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, the match headed into overtime. Baldwin Wallace had a golden scoring opportunity early in the extra period but couldn't get the shot off.
Marietta capitalized on the opportunity and sealed the victory on Reasoner's second goal of the day. Freshman
Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) sent a cross into the box where Reasoner dribbled around a defender creating just enough space to get the game winning shot off. The goal was his fifth of the season.
In a closely contested match, Marietta held a slim 19-17 margin in shots. Baldwin Wallace took the only two corner kicks of the match.
Marietta keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) recorded six saves on the day, while Mehal stopped nine Pioneer shots.
