MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) notched his second career hat trick as the Marietta College men's soccer team dominated rival Muskingum University 5-0 Wednesday (Oct. 5) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 7-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum falls to 3-8-1 on the season and 0-2 in the OAC.
"It's nice to see Taylor get in a groove and his early goal really put us at ease," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "I felt that we controlled the tempo of the game and putting two in right after the break finished it off for us."
Marietta went on the attack right from the opening whistle and created several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the match. Reasoner opened the scoring with the first of his three goals at the 7:04 mark.
Muskingum attempted to clear the ball out of their box but
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) headed the ball into the center of the 6-yard box. Reasoner took the pass and slipped the ball past Muskie keeper Josh Routte for the game-winner.
Reasoner made it 2-0 in the 34th minute.
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) sent a long thru ball into the 18-yard box to Reasoner who fired a shot inside the far left post for the goal.
While Reasoner was leading the offense, Marietta's defense kept the Muskies at bay. Huck,
Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan),
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) held Muskingum without a shot on goal in the first half.
Any hope the Muskies had for a second half comeback were quickly dashed. 35 seconds into the final period Pappas sent a cross into the far right post where
Alex Gruss (Portage, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) tapped it in for his first goal of the season and a 3-0 Pioneer lead.
After picking up a pair of assists, Pappas notched his first goal of the season three minutes later when he chipped the ball over Routte's head from the left corner of the 18-yard box.
Reasoner completed his hat trick in the 55th minute. Gruss passed the ball to reasoned who riffled a shot from 25-yards out inside the right post for his eight goal of the season.
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) started in goal for Marietta and made one save in just under 76 minutes of play.
Trevor Dykstra (Jamestown, N.Y./Falconer Central) and
Adam Hoot (Medina, N.Y./Medina) split the final 14 minutes. Dykstra recorded the Pioneer's second save of the game.
Routte went the distance for the Muskies and had four saves.
For the match, Marietta outshot the Muskies 21-5. The Pioneers also held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
