Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

John Carroll escapes with 1-0 win over Men's Soccer

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team lost a hard fought Ohio Athletic Conference match at John Carroll University by the score of 1-0 Saturday (Oct. 8) evening in Don Shula Stadium. Marietta drops to 7-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks move to 6-5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the OAC.

The two evenly matched teams found scoring opportunities hard to come by as both defenses controlled the opposition's attack. Scoreless at halftime, each team managed five shots in the first half including two on goal.

Marietta's back line of Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Adam Fox (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) helped keep the pressure off of keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut). Sholl made a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes and finished with four on the evening.

John Carroll scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute. Hayden Parente's shot hit the cross bar, deflected off of a Pioneer defender and into the goal for the game winner. Jacob Lombardo was credited with the assist.

With the one-goal lead in hand, John Carroll tightened up even more on defense. The Blue Streaks limited Marietta to a pair of shots in the second half and only one on goal which keeper Liam McIntosh stopped for his third save of the match.

For the match, John Carroll outshot the Pioneers 10-7, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal The Blue Streaks took four corner kicks to only one for Marietta.

Marietta travels to the University of Mount Union on Tuesday (Oct. 11) for a 7 p.m. match. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu. You can also follow the Pioneers on Facebook at facebook.com/MariettaCollege and @MariettaPioneer on Twitter and Instagram.
