CINCINNATI, Ohio — The College of Mount St. Joseph men's soccer team downed Marietta College by the score of 1-0 Wednesday (Sept. 21) evening. The loss drops Marietta to 4-4-1 on the season, while the Lions improve to 5-1-2 overall.
An evenly matched first half resulted in a scoreless tie at the break. Mount St. Joseph held a slim 5-4 edge in shots in the opening period. But the Pioneers had two on goal, while the Lions managed just one.
The Lions got on the board in the 55th minute. Alex Gross sent a cross into the box where Tyler Schumann managed to get his head on the ball and deflect it past the Pioneer keeper for the game winner.
Mount St. Joseph's defense posted the clean sheet. The Lions limited Marietta to three second half shots and didn't allow any in the final 16-plus minutes of the match.
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) had two saves in goal for the Pioneers. Will Schwing notched the shutout with three saves for the Lions.
For the match, Mount St. Joseph outshot the Pioneers 9-7. Marietta took eight corners in the match to just one for the Lions.
