MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College won two out of three matches on the first day of the River City Volleyball Classic Friday (Sept. 2) in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers defeated Bluefield College and West Virginia Tech and lost to Midway College. Marietta improves to 3-1 on the season.
Marietta won a five-set thriller over Bluefield. The game scores were 19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 and 15-13.
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) led the Pioneer attack with 19 kills.
Delaney Dawson (Granville, Ohio/Granville) and
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) finished with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Dawson also posted 24 assists, while
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) had 27 assists.
Midway College downed the Pioneers 3-1 with game scores of 15-25, 29-27, 25-17 and 25-22. Vodopich and
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) each had 14 kills to lead Marietta. Staten and Dawson again split the setting duties notching 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
Defensively, four Pioneers had double figures in digs. Vodopich led the way with 17, followed by
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) with 14, Denallo with 11 and
Amber Mauric (Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) with 10.
In the third match of the day, the Pioneers beat West Virginia Tech 22-25, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13. Sophomore
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) paced the Pioneers with 13 kills. Staten dished out 33 assists, while Vodopich and Peters recorded 16 and 14 digs.
Marietta finishes play in the River City Classic on Saturday (Sept. 3) with a 10 a.m. match against Thiel College and a 2 p.m. tilt with Kentucky Christian.
