MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a dominating 3-0 victory over visiting Franciscan University Friday (Sept. 2) afternoon.
Adam Fox (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) gave the Pioneers an early lead with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Fox shot from the top of the 16-yard box and buried the ball in the lower left corner of the net.
"This was a good workman like performace," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "It wasn't always pretty but at the end of the day the boys got the job done. We have to continue to work to get better and that starts on Sunday."
Fifth-year senior
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) extended the lead with a goal in the 57th minute.
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) sent the ball into the box where Reasoner finished it off for the score.
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute.
"Foxy's goal got us going and Taylor picked up where he left off last year," Bergin said. "And Rolfes' goal was class."
While the offense was scoring up top, Marietta's defense limited the Barons to just two shots on goal.
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta),
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield),
Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) blanketed the Franciscan strikers all afternoon.
Sebastian Parra (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) made two saves in goal for the Pioneers en route to the clean sheet. Thomas Dosedel had five saves for Franciscan.
Marietta outshot the Barons 14-8 and held a commanding 13-1 lead in corner kicks.
The Pioneers travel to Granville, Ohio on Sunday (Sept. 4) for a 2 p.m. match at Denison University. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
