PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The brothers Spagnolo combined on the only goal of the match propelling La Roche College to a 1-0 overtime victory over Marietta College Sunday (Sept. 18) afternoon in men's soccer. The loss drops Marietta to 4-3-1 on the season, while La Roche improves to 4-3 overall.
Peter Spagnolo sent a thru ball to his brother Tom who beat Pioneer keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) in the 96th minute for the game winner. The goal was Tom's first of the season.
Marietta had a chance to end the game in regulation but the Redhawk defense turned the Pioneers away.
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) took a shot that was saved, but not controlled, by La Roche keeper Austin Gorman. Marietta collected the rebound and had point blank shots from
Alex Gruss (Portage, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) and
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) blocked by Redhawk defenders.
"We need to take our chances when presented to us," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We had multiple chances in the second half to take the game but failed to. We have to start figuring this out or it will be a season long battle of games like this."
Sholl finished with five saves in goal for the Pioneers and Gorman notched eight for La Roche.
Marietta outshot the Redhawks 15-13, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Pioneers also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
