Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer bounces the Bobcats 3-0

LATROBE, Pa. — Three different Pioneers scored goals as the Marietta College men's soccer team shutout the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg 3-0 Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon. Marietta improves to 4-2-1 on the season, while the Bobcats slip to 0-6 on the season.

"I'm happy, but not satisfied," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "I'll never turn a win away, but I would like to see us put more of a complete performance together. At times I thought we were very good and other times we were average. We need to find a level of consistency."

Marietta went on the attack right from the opening whistle. Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) hit the post with a shot and Austin Fligor (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) was there to put the rebound in the back of the net just over four minutes into the match. The goal was Fligor's second of the season and his first game winner.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime. Marietta keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) stopped three Bobcat shots in the opening period and had four saves for the match. The clean sheet was his first of the season.

The Pioneers extended their lead in the 57th minute when Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson) scored an unassisted goal. Johnson shot from the top of the box and beat Greensburg keeper Reese Laurell for his first goal of the fall.

Johnson just missed his second goal of the match seven minutes later when his shot hit the cross bar.

With the match in hand, Drew Schrock (Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes) got in on the fun when he riffled a long shot from over 25-yards out that got over Laurell's head in the 90th minute. The goal was the first of Schrock's collegiate career.

In addition to Sholl's four saves in goal, the Pioneers' back line of Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) controlled Greensburg's strikers and helped Marietta record its second shutout of the season.

Marietta outshot the Bobcats 15-8, including 10-2 in the second half. Pitt. Greensburg had a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Marietta is right back on the pitch Sunday (Sept. 17) with a 2 p.m. match at La Roche College. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu. You can also follow the Pioneers on Facebook at facebook.com/MariettaCollege and @MariettaPioneer on Twitter and Instagram.
