Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Reasoner leads Men's Soccer to overtime victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) headed home the game winner 70 seconds into the first overtime period lifting Marietta College to a 2-1 win over the College of Wooster Wednesday (Sept. 14) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Fighting Scots slip to 2-3-1 overall.

"We gutted this one out," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "I am happy for Taylor and the guys getting him the ball in places where he can be dangerous."

With scoring opportunities at a premium, Wooster took advantage of a Pioneer mistake to grab the lead just before halftime. Marietta was whistled for a foul on the far left side of the 18-yard box giving the Scots a penalty kick. Austin Russell converted the penalty for a 1-0 Wooster lead with two minutes left in the first half.

Both defenses were controlling the opposition's offensive attack limiting quality shots on goal. It took a SportsCenter quality play for the Pioneers to level the match.

Noah Sellers (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) launched a throw in from midfield that Kyle Rosselot (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) headed to a streaking Reasoner. Reasoner's first touch flicked the ball over the head of a Wooster defender just outside the right corner of the 18-yard box.

Reasoner quickly gathered the ball and fired off a shot past the charging Scot goalkeeper for the equalizer in the 62nd minute.

"At halftime we talked about needing a bigger effort winning balls in the midfield," Bergin said. "By doing that we minimzed their attack and allowed our skill guys to get on the ball."

Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match headed into overtime. Marietta immediately went on the attack and nearly ended the match in a matter of seconds when Rosselot bounced a header off the crossbar 36 seconds into the period.

When the dust settled after Rosselot hit the crossbar, the Pioneers had a thrown in from the left side. Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) placed a perfect throw inside the 6-yard box where Reasoner was waiting to head it home for the game winner.

With two goals, Reasoner recorded the seventh multi-goal match of his career. He has tallied four goals this season.

Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers making four saves on the day. Scot Stacho played the entire match in goal for Wooster and made one save.

For the match, Wooster outshot the Pioneers 7-6. Marietta held a slim 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Marietta hits the road for three straight matches starting with a 3 p.m. kickoff at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg on Saturday (Sept. 17).
