STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Franciscan University swept Marietta College 3-0 in volleyball action Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon. The Barons posted game scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18 for the win. The Pioneers slip to 7-3 overall, while Franciscan improves to 2-0 on the season.
Marietta grabbed the early lead in the first game. The Pioneers led 10-3 following a Franciscan attack error forcing the Barons to call a timeout. After regrouping during the timeout, Franciscan went on a 7-1 run cutting the deficit to one, 11-10.
The Pioneers stretched the margin back to three, 16-13, on a kill by
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison). But Franciscan answered with an 8-2 run to go on top, 21-18. A kill from
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) pulled the Pioneers to within a point at 24-23 but the Barons finished off the set with a kill on the next point.
Franciscan never trailed in the second or third game.
Arrowood and
Delaney Dawson (Granville, Ohio/Granville) each had nine kills to lead the Pioneers. Barnes and
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) notched seven kills apiece.
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) piloted the offense with 21 assists.
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had a team-high 10 digs.
