MARIETTA, Ohio — Adrian College scored two second half goals to upset Marietta College 2-0 Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon in men's soccer action in the 31st annual Marietta Classic. The Pioneers fall to 2-2 on the season and Adrian improves to 2-1 overall.
Neither team's offense mounted much of an attack in the first half. The Pioneers outshot Adrian 4-1 in the opening period, but none of the five shots were on goal as the defenses dominated play.
The Bulldogs finally broke through when the Pioneers were whistled for a foul inside the box resulting in a penalty kick for Adrian. Shayan Shushtari converted the penalty for a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Marietta turned up its offense a notch in the second half taking five more shots, including four on goal. However, Bulldog keeper Spencer Brown was ready for the challenge making four saves to preserve the shutout.
Brandon Katona, with an assist from Mike Osorio, iced the match in the 83rd minute with his second goal of the season.
For the game, Marietta outshot the Bulldogs 9-6. The Pioneers took five corner kicks to just three for Adrian.
