Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer ties Westminster 1-1 in double overtime

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and Westminster College battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw Sunday (Sept. 11) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Titans are 2-2-2 overall.

The Pioneers dominated possession in the first half earning six corner kicks but managed just one shot on goal in the period. Marietta's defense limited Westminster to a pair of shots on goal in the opening period and the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Westminster's Jon Clark put the Titans on top in the 55th minute. Clark fired a direct kick from the right side of the field and 25-yards out just inside the far post for the first goal of the game.

Marietta got the equalizer with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Ray Rott (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) centered the ball to Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) at the top of the 18-yard box. Ziaja slipped the ball into the lower right corner of the net knotting the score at 1-1. The goal was Ziaja's second of the season.

With the score tied at the end of 90 minutes, the match headed into overtime. Neither team threatened in the first extra period. Westminster took a shot from nearly 50-yards out and the Pioneers lone shot was a header that sailed wide.

The second 10-minute overtime period was much like the first. Westminster fired off one long-range shot for the stanza's only shot.

Sebastian Parra (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) played all 110 minutes in goal for Marietta recoding six saves. AJ Bove went the distance in goal for the Titans making two saves in the match.

Marietta outshot the Titans 14-10 for the match, but Westminster held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took 12 corner kicks to just four for the Titans.
