MARIETTA, Ohio — Three Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta College defeated Wilmington College 64-57 Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball. Marietta improves to 11-10 overall and 5-9 in the OAC. The Quakers fall to 7-14 on the season and 4-10 in conference play.
Sophomore
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) led all scorers with 22 points. Herd just missed the double-double finishing with a team-high nine rebounds.
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) sank three from behind the arc and added 13 points, while freshman post player
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) chipped in with 10 points and seven boards.
Mackenzie Campbell paced the Quakers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Emily Smith scored 10 points off the bench and Mary Moyer grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Wilmington hit one of two free throws just over a minute into the game for its only lead of the afternoon. Liedtke drained a three-pointer on the next possession to put Marietta in front for good.
The Quakers struggled to put the ball in the basket in the early going hitting just one of their first 14 shots from the floor. However, Marietta failed to capitalize on Wilmington's ice cold shooting and led by only two, 12-10, after the first quarter.
Marietta extended the lead in the second period and took a 10-point lead, 32-22, into halftime. Wilmington's shooting woes continued, as the Quakers were 1-of-13 from three-point range in the half.
The Pioneers pushed the lead to as many as 13 points in the second half. But, Wilmington slowly chipped away at the deficit. Ja'Cole Taylor made one of two free throws with 1:24 left in the game to get WC within four points, 59-55.
Wilmington turned up the defensive pressure on the next possession and Liedtke was forced to take a desperation three-pointer as the shot clock expired. Taylor was whistled for a foul sending Liedtke to the line for three free throws. The junior sank all three freebies sealing the victory.
For the game, Marietta shot 34.9% (22-of-63) from the floor, 35.7% (5-of-14) from three-point range and 68.2% (15-of-22) at the line. The Quakers were 21-of-64 (32.8%) from the floor, 2-of-23 (8.7%) from three-point range and 13-of-19 (68.4%) at the line.
Wilmington outrebounded the Pioneers 50-42. The Quakers turned the ball over 18 times, while Marietta committed 12 turnovers.
