ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College 82-67 Wednesday (Feb. 10) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pioneers fall to 11-11 overall and 5-10 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 15-6 on the season and 9-5 in conference play.
Freshman
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) was the lone Pioneer in double figures with 15 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum),
Ashley Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) and
Jo Herd-Middlebrooks (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) each finished with nine points. Herd-Middlebrooks had a game-high eight rebounds.
Annie Bova and Katie Reed scored 18 and 17 points, respectively to lead Mount Union. Sara Grippi added 10 points. On the glass, Abby Wemhoff pulled down eight boards.
Marietta scored the first four points of the game and then a three-pointer from Herd put the Pioneers up, 7-3, midway through the first quarter. The Purple Raiders responded with a 20-3 run to lead by 13 points, 23-10, with a minute left in the opening period.
Mount Union led 25-12 after the first quarter and took a 46-32 lead into halftime. The Raiders pushed the margin to as many as 27 points in the third quarter.
For the game, Marietta shot 37.5% (21-of-56) from the floor, 50.0% (6-of-12) from three-point range and 90.5% (19-of-21) at the line. The Purple Raiders were 27-of-68 (39.7%) from the floor, 11-of-25 (44.0%) behind the arc and 17-of-23 (73.9%) at the line.
Mount Union edged the Pioneers on the boards, 42-39. Marietta turned the ball over 13 times, while the Raiders committed 10 turnovers.
