COLUMBUS, Ohio — No. 24 ranked Capital University led start to finish as the Crusaders defeated Marietta College 66-48 Wednesday (Feb. 3) evening in women's basketball action. The Pioneers slip to 10-10 overall and 4-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improves to 16-4 on the season and 9-4 in conference play.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) paced Marietta with 12 points.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) finished with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) added eight points off the bench.
Leading the way for Capital was Jenna Erwin with 14 points. Nina Napolitano scored 13 points and Meredith Ovies had 11. Simonne Gage dished out 10 assists and grabbed six boards, while Kristen Thompson also notched six rebounds.
The Crusaders raced out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back. Marietta was ice cold in the first half shooting 21.4% from the floor and missing all 10 three-point attempts.
Capital held the Pioneers to 17 first-half points and took a 36-17 lead into halftime. Marietta outscored CU in the third quarter 19-13, but it wasn't enough to challenge the nationally ranked Crusaders.
For the game, Marietta shot 31.7% (19-of-60) from the floor, 9.1% (2-of-22) from three-point range and 47.1% (8-of-17) at the line. The Crusaders were 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor, 6-of-16 (37.5%) behind the arc and 4-of-7 (57.1%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Capital 40-38. Marietta turned the ball over 20 times, while Capital committed 16 turnovers.
